Xanax Dosage

Xanax Dosage for Anxiety Disorders

Xanax dosage varies from patient to patient. They depend on the patient’s history, condition, need and response to the drug. Most of the times the dosage is low and meets the patient’s need readily. In some severe cases more than 4mg needs to be administered in a day. In such cases, the increase should be slow and carefully monitored.

Xanax doses for Anxiety Disorders

Xanax is primarily administered for anxiety disorders. Typically the treatment begins with low daily doses like 0.25 to 0.5 mg, three times a day. Constant monitoring is needed to see how the patient responds. After a 3-4 day interval the dosage is slowly increased to achieve the maximum benefits. In no way should it cross beyond 4mg a day. The longer you use the medicine the stronger the risk of dependency gets.

Like the initiation and slow increase in dosage, the reverse is also true. When no longer needed, the drug should be steadily weaned off with decreasing doses daily. Usually doctors recommend a steady 0.5 mg decrease every 3 days. However, this is not a conclusive fact and can differ from patient to patient.

Panic Disorder – Xanax Doses

Panic disorder is more severe than normal anxiety disorder cases. In these cases Xanax is administered at more than 4mg per day doses. Experiments done in controlled atmosphere and on specific demographics has shown that the dose can range from 1mg and go up to 10 mg a day depending on the severity of the case, the average being around 5-6mg/day. Extensive experiments included 1700 patients who participated in this study called panic disorder development program. Of them, 300 patients were given Xanax doses of more than 7 mg per day, around 100 of them were given the maximum doses of 9 mg per day. A few severe cases were also given a 10mg per day dose to get the required effects.

Xanax Dose Titration

There are specific methods to Xanax treatment.

  • It should begin with a low dose of 0.5 mg given 3 times a day.
  • Based on the patient’s response to the drug the dose should be increased in 3 to 4 day intervals.
  • This increase should be only in incremental doses of 1mg per day.
  • To Xanax dosage levels which are more than 4 mg a day, a slower titration is advised. This will ensure that the pharmacodynamic effect of the drug is felt at full force.
  • The daily dosage and intervals should be evenly spaced out between the waking and sleeping hours. This will prevent the occurrence of inter-dose symptoms.

In most cases, doctors start the therapy with low doses. This is to see how well the medicine is working and also to lessen any negative side effects or allergies should they occur. In lower doses they can be minimized and managed easily. The dosage should be slowly and steadily increased till it reaches the desired stage of maximum benefits. When the panic attacks recede you will know the medicine is working fine for you.

Dose Maintenance

For patients whose Xanax intake is more than 4mg a day could consult with their doctors to slowly reduce the dosage. Constant monitoring will help manage this reduction better. However, in no way should the medication be stopped abruptly. According to a post marketing dose-response study done in a controlled atmosphere, most patients who were taking more than 4mg per day could slowly reduce their Xanax intake to less than 50% in 3 months, and this without adversely affecting the system or their condition.
